Our lives are filled with contracts. Some are written but most are oral. We are constantly entering into agreements. They can be simple ones like “if you agree to give me a burger made the way I want it I will pay you $5.00.” They can also be as complicated as a person wants them to be.

Students will likely sign at least one major contract during their time here at the university. It is vital that you understand one major rule about contracts: read them! Now a person might respond, “Well, of course I will read them!” The truth, however, is that many people never read the entire agreement. It may be that they are in a hurry, or that they think the person or company on the other side explained it to them well enough.

Understand that once your signature goes on the paper it is assumed that (1) you actually read it, and (2) you agreed with everything that it says.

You will not get a chance for a “do over” when something goes wrong later.

Always take the time to review any contract you sign. Ask for a blank copy. Then make an appointment with our office and we can review it together.
