Michigan Driver’s Licenses: Do I Need One?
Many international and out-of-state students bring their cars to campus, but depending on their situation, they may also need to obtain a Michigan driver’s license.
- If you are maintaining residency in your home state or country, you do not need a Michigan driver’s license. You may need to update your auto insurance if you plan to drive in Michigan for an extended period of time — see our auto insurance article for more information.
- If you become a resident of the state of Michigan, you will need to visit the Secretary of State office to (1) obtain a new Michigan driver’s license and (2) purchase a Michigan license plate for your vehicle.
International Students
If you have a valid driver’s license from another country, you may be able to drive in Michigan if it is printed with an English translation and qualifies under the Foreign Driver’s License Treaty Countries. If you need to apply for a Michigan driver’s license, you must be legally present with a visa, employment authorization, or permanent residence as well as a Michigan home address.

Out-of-State Students
If you become a permanent resident in Michigan and need to obtain a first-time Michigan license, you will need to visit the Secretary of State office in person. Visit SOS’s website to learn more about the required documents for converting your current out-of-state license, including proof of identity, Michigan residence, and legal presence.
Michigan License Plates
When you move to Michigan, you must purchase a Michigan license plate for your vehicle.
