Need a Safe Ride?

If you are impaired from drinking or need a safe ride home for any other reason, consider using the following resources to travel safely.

The University offers several options regarding late night transportation that are free for students, faculty, and staff.

Safe Ride

Operating daily between the hours of 8:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m., Safe Ride can drop you off at residence halls, parked cars, or your local residence anywhere within one mile of various pickup locations on campus. Use the mobile app to schedule a ride, or call (734) 647-8000. Note: You must be able to provide your driver with a valid U-M ID when you are picked up.

Lyft - Night Owl Rides

University of Michigan students can receive $4 off rideshare between the hours 8:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. daily through the Night Owl Rides program. Your ride pickup location and destination must fall within the designated service area to receive the discount. Sign up through the Lyft Business invitation sent to your UMich email on July 1st, 2025.

AAA - “Tow to Go”

If you become impaired from drinking alcohol and cannot locate safe transportation, AAA offers "Tow to Go" - a free program designed to combat drunk driving in Michigan and in other states. A tow truck will give you and your vehicle a free and confidential ride to a safe place anywhere within a 10-mile radius of your location.

To obtain the service or to learn more information, call 1-855-286-9246 (1-855-2-TOW-2-GO). Please note:

  • You do not have to be a member of AAA to use the service.
  • You cannot make an appointment – it is meant to be a safety net for those who did not plan ahead.
  • Tow trucks can usually transport up to two passengers. If there are more people in your party, you’ll need to make other arrangements.
  • The service may not be available in rural areas.
  • The service is available for St. Patrick’s Day, Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas through New Year’s Day.
