Video - Know Your Legal Rights!

Know Your Rights

This video was produced by U-M students for a class project.  In it, you will hear Douglas Lewis, Director of Student Legal Services, speak on police etiquette and information on your legal rights.

Whether you are being stopped while walking down the street, while driving in your car, or while just sitting around in the comfort of your home, it is important to know and exercise your legal rights.

Want to know more?  Below are some helpful websites:

  • An organization called Flex Your Rights produced the YouTube video:  Busted: The Citizen's Guide to Surviving Police Encounters -  it gives good advice on how to handle a police encounter.
  • The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has a website that offers helpful suggestions about dealing with the police, immigration agents, or the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI).
  • The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)  has a downloadable/printable "Know Your Rights" card that you can carry.

Mr. Lewis, as well as, our other criminal defense attorneys is available to speak to any student group/organization on this topic.  This can be accomplished by requesting a speaker.
